Alien Species

Article 8(h) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) requires Contracting Parties, as far as possible and as appropriate, to 'prevent the introduction of, control or eradicate those alien species which threaten ecosystems, habitats or species.' The CBD is part way through a work programme aimed at developing agreed global procedures and guidelines covering the effective regulation of the introduction, control and eradication of alien species which are or may cause environmental problems. This programme is being carried out in collaboration with the Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP). Guiding principles for the prevention, control and eradication of alien species are being developed and collaboration is underway with other conventions such as Ramsar, Bonn, Bern and the International Plant Protection Committee.
