Climate Change and Biological Diversity.

- Climate change is variation in either the mean state of the climate or in its variability, persisting for an extended period, typically decades or longer. It encompasses temperature increases ("global warming"), sea-level rise, changes in precipitation patterns, and increased frequencies of extreme events. Each of these phenomena can impact on biological diversity. The need for the rate of climate change to be reduced to allow ecosystems to adjust is recognised in the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Measures such as the conservation and sustainable management of forests and other ecosystems can contribute simultaneously to both the UNFCCC and CBD. Thus there are opportunities for synergies between the two conventions, and the Conference of the Parties to CBD has called for strengthened collaboration between them.
