CBD Cross-cutting issues
Indicators
The issue of indicators was first raised at CoP2, where it was stated that the use of biodiversity indicators was particularly timely and cost-effective, and should be promoted as a method of assessing the effectiveness of measures taken to conserve biodiversity under the CBD. A programme of work on indicators was approved in Decision IV/1. Work undertaken since CoP4 has focused on identifying a core, global set of indicators which incorporate state, pressure and response indicators. At the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002, it was agreed to 'achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on earth'. Following this, CoP7 agreed a framework of indicators (Decision VII.30) to measure progress towards achievement of the WSSD target. A meeting to discuss the global indicators was subsequently held in Bangkok in February 2005.
